Dragonfly Days

New year, new delights and new soul on Dragonfly Farm

Brenda Shelley - Saturday, March 06, 2010
It’s March already and Dragonfly Farm is abuzz with delightful newnesses.

Jacquie has created five new flavours of Alpine Goat’s Cheese, they’re delightful AND delicious - Wasabi, Tomato & Herb, Cranberry, Tarragon and Shiraz. Truly yummy!

Our cheeses are being stocked in a myriad of new places all over the country – so you’ll be able to experience these new tastes as soon as you’re able to get to your closest stockist. (Or contact us if you can’t find one close to you.)
  • We’re at the Stanford Evening Market on the last Friday of every month and at the Portersville Market in Tokai every Saturday.
  • In KZN you can find our cheeses at the Shongweni Farmer’s Market, the Heritage Market in Hillcrest and at Palmco.
  • Haricots Deli and Bistro at the River Bend Lodge in Grahamstown is stocking our cheese now, as well as two shops in the Western Cape - Kwalapa in the Montbello Craft Centre in Newlands and Jane’s Delicious Deli in Somerset West.
We have loads of new fans – especially after attending the Lourensford Estate Family Market in February. It’s wonderful seeing goats cheese lovers discovering our cheeses for the first time.

We also have some new family members on the farm, a mummy pig and her babies have decided to come and live with us. We’ve asked around the village but nobody seems to know where they came from. They came strolling down the driveway one morning and have never left.

We suspect that it may be because word has spread that our farm is a sanctuary for animals as there is NO slaughtering allowed.

Mrs Pig and her babes, Hansel and Gretel, have brought a new dimension to farm life and work hard to earn their keep. They’re fantastic at turning and working the compost making a valuable contribution to our permaculture approach to farming.

They have also inspired us to start planning a Goat Sanctuary where animal lovers can sponsor a goat on Dragonfly Farm (you can come and visit it too). We just cannot bring ourselves to sell tame male goats off to be used in sacrificial rituals and we cannot afford to keep all of them ourselves. Once we’ve devised a plan we’ll let you know.

We will be at the Fresh Produce Market (Rhodes High School, Mowbray) for the Cape Town Taste Festival from the 24th to 28th March, the Cheese Festival in April and the Good Food and Wine Show in May. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Until next time...

Celebrations Abound at Dragonfly Farm!

Brenda Shelley - Thursday, August 27, 2009
Life on Dragonfly Farm is hectic at the moment (to say the least). So much is happening and we have much to celebrate – awards, births and the promise of Spring!

We are thrilled to have received the “Women Farmer of the Year” award for Top Producer for the National Market from the Department of Agriculture last week. We’re flying up to Bloemfontein on the 29th of August for the Finals and are hoping we’ll make the Western Cape proud and win the main award.

Watch this space – we’re planning to kick some butt ;-)

Although our hard work is rewarded on a daily basis when we see our happy goats and our customers compliment us on how fabulous our cheese is – it’s really nice to receive an “official” affirmation like this.

There are also a bevy of births to celebrate EACH day. As this is being written we’ve had 8 mommy goats giving birth to 15 babies just today and Jaqui is out there expecting more!

We’ve posted some pics of these new additions on our website – click here to see them (spot the Twins!).

Then of course there is the promise of Spring – the sun is rising earlier, the bleating of the new kids on the block and the smell of fresh Fynbos – all much needed inspirations after the winter.

It ain't easy being farm gals sometimes, long days and hard work - but we’re all good, as they say.
